because I'm in New York at the CMJ conference.
Standouts so far:
- Ringo Deathstarr (awesome rocked-out shoegaze from Austin)
- A Sunny Day In Glasgow (kinda surprised by this one; total C86/Slumberland worshop)
- Marnie Stern (way better than the last time I saw her)
- Women (Akron/Family reborn as a lo-fi math-rock band?)
- Parts and Labor (see Marnie Stern)
- The Coathangers (all-girl sassy garage punk from Atlanta)
- Ponytail (one of my favorite live bands being one of the best bands I've seen at the festival? NO WAI)
will keep you posted on things and maybe do a CMJ retro$pective. I'M HAVING A GOOD TIME. :)

Eddy Current Suppression Ring - Demon's Demands 7"
Up there as one of the best releases of 2008 for me. I play this on Street Anger Radio all the time, so if you listen you might be acquainted with the title track. This is one of a handful of records I've been spinning recently that make waking up in the morning and dealing with bullshit worth it.
Eddy Current Suppression Ring are four dudes from Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, home of some of the best underground music you can find these days (My Disco, Witch Hats, Fabulous Diamonds, a zillion other fucking awesome groups). They all work in a record pressing plant and started the band because they were friends and wanted to be in a sweet band. It took them to the top 10 of the Australian charts with their most recent long-player, Primary Colors, released in the US on Goner. Musically, it reminds me of a slightly slower and garagier Buzzcocks, or if the Clean were more punk. Their songs tend to be slow burners - maybe not immediately catchy, but as you get closer to the end, you have a revelation: "Holy shit, this band rules." They toured the US in '07, and apparently their DC show was one of the highlights. Here's to hoping they come back.
Anyway, the Demon's Demands 7" was released on Iron Lung Records in a one-time edition of 500. It sold out immediately, and now yer only option for grabbing it is off of eBay or a vinyl buying/trading site. I don't think too many will be showing up for a while yet, because this is going to be a jewel of a lot of collections. This rip is my own, and while it's not quite audiophile quality, it just has a little bit of surface noise. Like actually listening to a record.

Anyone who's interested in unloading other records of theirs, get in touch. I have their s/t LP, but none of the 7"s.

Need New Body - three videos
Need New Body are one of those bands that you had a chance to see but never did for whatever reason. Mine was because I had seen Hot Cross the night before and didn't want to drive an hour up to Wallingford again to see some noisy band that may or may not be good. I guarantee they would have put on a better show than Hot Cross.
