I play this on Street Anger Radio all the time, so if you listen you might be acquainted with the title track. This is one of a handful of records I've been spinning recently that make waking up in the morning and dealing with bullshit worth it.

Eddy Current Suppression Ring are four dudes from Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, home of some of the best underground music you can find these days (My Disco, Witch Hats, Fabulous Diamonds, a zillion other fucking awesome groups). They all work in a record pressing plant and started the band because they were friends and wanted to be in a sweet band. It took them to the top 10 of the Australian charts with their most recent long-player, Primary Colors, released in the US on Goner. Musically, it reminds me of a slightly slower and garagier Buzzcocks, or if the Clean were more punk. Their songs tend to be slow burners - maybe not immediately catchy, but as you get closer to the end, you have a revelation: "Holy shit, this band rules." They toured the US in '07, and apparently their DC show was one of the highlights. Here's to hoping they come back.

Anyway, the Demon's Demands 7" was released on Iron Lung Records in a one-time edition of 500. It sold out immediately, and now yer only option for grabbing it is off of eBay or a vinyl buying/trading site. I don't think too many will be showing up for a while yet, because this is going to be a jewel of a lot of collections. This rip is my own, and while it's not quite audiophile quality, it just has a little bit of surface noise. Like actually listening to a record.

demon's downloads

Anyone who's interested in unloading other records of theirs, get in touch. I have their s/t LP, but none of the 7"s.

Pixies vs. Toadies

1988:

1994:

COINCIDENCE? Last weekend they flattened Philly and Maryland with punishing industrial punk.

While Drunkdriver are only a three-piece, they make more noise than most full bands - guitarist Kristy cranks all three amps up way beyond where they should be, creating a brutal, bludgeoning, in-the-red sound while singer Berdan pukes out lyrics like "You taste like cancer" into a delay pedal. It's a horrifying combination, somewhere between Baltimore heroes (and Street Anger favorites) Double Dagger and Yahweh or the Highway-era Arab on Radar.

They type='text'>Motor Away

Sorry for the break, I was really busy with my last week of my summer internship, and then spent a week helping my younger brother move to the University of Missouri. St. Louis is cool (check out Vintage Vinyl if you're ever in the area), as is Columbia, where I got invited to a noise show after being in town for 15 minutes.

Here's a Guided By Voices video to make up for the delay. Ohio has a long tradition of weirdo rock dudes - oddly enough, they weren't represented at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. No GBV, no Devo (a huge "what the fuck"), and you can bet your "Busy Making Love And War" 7" that Times New Viking won't be in there. Instead, you get to look at Bono's costumes he wore on U2's "Pompous Asshole" tour in '96.

Also, this video, like most of GBV's, reminds me of Pete and Pete.

8-5 Street Anger playlist

1 Pavement Box Elder Westing By Musket And Sextant
2 Fearless Iranians From Hell Blow Up The Embassy s/t 7"
3 Black Randy Idi Amin Dangerhouse singles comp
4 A Frames Hostage Crisis A Frames
5 My Disco A Christ Pendant Comfort Her Neck Paradise
6 Silver Daggers Real Neat Flag New High and Ord
7 The Kills Cat Claw Keep On Your Mean Side
8 Sonic Youth Star Power EVOL
9 Flipper The Way of the World Generic
10 Dead Kennedys Let's Lynch The Landlord Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables
11 Sex Vid Misprint live cassette
12 Economist Point A - Point B Economist
13 Suicidal Tendencies Institutionalized s/t
14 Brainworms Born With A Beard Which is Worse?
15 Universal Order of Armageddon Entire Vast Situation discography
16 Navies A Surveyor's Measure s/t 7"
17 7654 Stories Secret Decay 2005 demo
18 Shotmaker 10/22/94 discography
19 Indian Summer Orchard Discography
20 Wow, Owls! Serious question, for anyone who may read this who can answer it: what were the criteria that the Fort Reno nominating committee used to select the bands? I'd rather sit through four hours of the singer from the Apes fronting Eyeball Skeleton than see pretty much any of these bands. Even the ones I haven't heard of or heard, because they play Fort Reno and then one other show a year at DC9 in front of 15 coworkers from their nonprofit.

Oh well, at least I'm going to see my WMUC buddies in Friends of the Library play, and probably go see the Apes too. But outside of that... yeesh.

Post your thoughts on the schedule in the comments. I remember a misguided KaZaA session in high school, downloading "Ian Curtis" by Thursday and hearing that whiny gap-toothed motherfucker sing the incredibly tactful line "We heard Ian Curtis kill himself again in your bed." (No, seriously.) There's also the possibly apocryphal Tony Wilson quote about Bono telling him that, when Ian Curtis was alive, he was the best frontman in rock, and that Bono was only number two; after Curtis' suicide, Bono pledged to take his place. I choose to believe this anecdote, because I've already made up my mind about Bono being a shallow, opportunistic piece of shit.

Thanks to German MTV and Facebook, I now have a new target for my [street] anger: "Let's Dance to Joy Division," by Liverpudlian jerkoffs the Wombats.

I first heard this song while studying abroad in Germany this past winter - it was getting a lot of play on German MTV, and I shuddered to think that people in England and Europe actually liked this song. Of course, I assumed it would never catch on in the United States, because we're all more interested in the new Nickelback or Panic at the Disco singles than any faggy British shit. That all changed when I saw the first Facebook advertisement for it, and within 24 hours, my girlfriend called me to bitch about "that shitty 'Dance to Joy Division' song on DC101". THE WOMBATS HAD BEGUN TO INVADE AMERICA'S AIRWAVES!!!!!!111ONE

First off, Wombats, it's incredibly lame to explicitly reference a band in a song title. That's essentially telling your listeners, "Hey, look at us. We're never going to be as good or as influential as our influences." Remember that CSS song "Let's Make Love and Listen to Death From Above"? Obnoxious bullshit. Actually, maybe more bands should do that, because it would mean that I would never listen to them. There's a part of me that would get a chuckle out of, say, Muse writing a song called "Radiohead," but then I realize I'd have to think about Muse.

I was originally going to go into a longer discussion of the lyrics to this song, but I don't want this blog entry to last 50 pages. This band needs to shut the fuck up and go back to England, and take the Kooks with them.

Anyway, here's an awesome live performance of Joy Division performing "Transmission" on some British TV show. While you're watching this, think of it as like taking a long, hot shower after cleaning out the sewers of shitty music. Check out Ian's dance moves starting at 2:18. RIP.

5-27 Street Anger Radio playlist

supload

1 Double Dagger Rearranging Digital Deck Chairs Ragged Rubble
2 At the Drive-In Alpha Centauri In/Casino/Out
3 Make Believe Witchcraft s/t EP
4 Times New Viking The Statue Pt. For example, the Dan Deacon/Jimmy Joe Roche collaboration Ultimate Reality - it's been receiving almost universal praise, and it's a film made up entirely of distorted, symmetrical clips from Arnold Schwartzenegger movies. There's also a common sense of absurdist humor that runs through a lot of this stuff, which is another reason why people have latched onto Baltimore. It's arty without being self-conscious.

Now that I've finished acting like some Sasha Frere-Jones jerkass music critic, I can get onto my description of the Video Hippos. Jim Triplett plays guitar and keyboard, Kevin O'Meara plays drums, they both sing, and they both make the insane videos that they project behind themselves while they play. Their psychedelic video productions range from clips of some bizarre Berenstain Bears TV show to really creepy hypnotism infomercials to dolphins eating pizza, then crying when they run out of pizza. Yeah, that's right. Watch it.

While they're definitely best experienced live (and they play in the Baltimore/DC area a few times a month and tour all the time), these Hippos totally hold their own musically. Comparisons to Japanther or No Age aren't entirely unfounded, as they are two guys who write short, stripped-down punk songs. The Video Hippos take a different, less aggressive approach than Japanther - there's a definite shoegaze influence in their sound, and they sound a little bit sadder than their contemporaries. Triplett's guitar tone (which he coaxes from a Squier Bullet) is loud, clangy, and a little bit jangly, but there's more space and atmosphere in their sound than you'd normally expect from a two-piece. O'Meara plays on a drum kit that has just four pieces, and he bashes away with laser precision. Last year's excellent Unbeast the Leash (CD on Monitor, spearmint-lookin' LP available from the fine folks at Wildfire Wildfire) features 13 of their jams, two of which ("Bearfight" and "Sick Dolphin") are available for download from this here blog.

Video Hippos play the Light House in Washington, DC on May 29, with DD/MM/YYYY and the Mommies. Right now they're on an extensive tour of eastern Canada with DD/MM/YYYY, heading up and down the Maritime provinces. They'll definitely be touring this summer and fall, so don't miss them when they come to your town.

Video Hippos - Bearfight
Video Hippos - Sick Dolphin

Tyvek

Every day on my way home from school I pass a house on my street that's under construction. Wrapped around the new top floor, to protect the wood from the elements or whatever, is a layer of Tyvek sheeting. Whenever I see that, I'm reminded of Detroit's Tyvek, whose "Summer Burns" 2x7" was one of the best records I picked up last year. Detroit's always been a hotbed of garage rock, as my buddy Paul, host of soul/garage power hourThe Get Down on WMUC, can attest.

Tyvek's a different beast from your Dirtbombs and White Stripes, though. Of the five members, three of them play guitar, but don't confuse them for any Hawthorne Heights bullshit. They're clearly a rock and roll band, but there's an undeniable post-punk vibe as well: think the Buzzcocks' anxious energy and sense of humor with Pink Flag-era Wire's, er, wiry arrangements. I've included two tracks from my rip of their "Summer Burns" 2x7". "Give It Up" has an awesome guitar riff and singalong chorus, and some of my favorite lyrics of late ("I saw you in the national press, I saw you on the national news / I saw you in the national parks, I saw you in the National Zoo"). "Air Conditioner" slows things down a little bit and is a little weirder, with a driving one-chord verse and lyrics about Whole Foods.

I can't wait to see these guys the next time they play DC or Baltimore. Get it from the fine folks at What's Yr Rupture.

Tyvek - Give It Up
Tyvek - Air Conditioner

On a related, weird note, they were featured on an MTV piece on lo-fi bands along with No Age, Times New Viking, Psychedelic Horseshit, and Jay Reatard. I found out about them through a chat room on Soulseek, where the members of the chat room kept talking about how great this song "Cats Are Neat" was. I downloaded it for myself and realized that Killed By Death compilations can suck it, this is the best punk song that nobody's ever heard, ever. I got a copy of their LP, Mutant Cats From Hell, thanks to Felix Havoc of Havoc Records finding a copy at the store he runs, but it's weird and kind of like a sloppy D.R.I. This version of the song is, in my opinion, a lot better - it's just sloppy, goofy punk, and can be found on a 7" that's nearly impossible to find. Let me know if you have a copy you wouldn't mind parting with.

Read the lyrics to "Cats are Neat" to see if you would enjoy this song. If you don't think this song is funny, in concept or in execution, this blog is probably not for you.

Cats are neat when they sleep on your feet
Cats are cool when they follow you to school
Cats are rad when they chew on your dad
Cats are fun when they play with your tongue

chorus x4:
Cats are neat
Cats are neat
Meow, meow, meow, meow

Cats are bitchin' when they sit in the kitchen
I just think "gosh" when I see a cat mosh
Cats are cool when they play with your tool
Cats are great when they eat off your plate

chorus x4

Cats are sweet when they're smashed in the street
Cats are creative, they're the real fashion skater
Cats are crazy 'cause they're just so darn lazy
Cats are nice when they chase pesky mice

chorus x4
meowwwwwwwww............

AMQA - Cats Are Neat

YouTube - Animal Collective live on Conan O'Brien

Give most bands four minutes of broadcast network television time, and they'll play their most popular song, or the single from their newest album. They'll move a few more units, get some exposure they wouldn't have otherwise received, and the performance will show up on YouTube with dozens of comments asking people to post a chain letter on five other videos or else the ghost of social networking sites pastw will haunt you forever.

Then there's Animal Collective, who are almost nothing like "most bands". When playing on Conan O'Brien last Thursday, they used the time allotted to them to play "#1" off of new album Strawberry Jam. Basically, they made space noises for four minutes.

I'm not a huge fan of Animal Collective. I haven't heard the new album yet, I'm only familiar with Sung Tongs, and when I saw them at SUNY Purchase when I was in high school I couldn't get into their set. This is a solid performance, and I'm going to check out their new album based on the fact that parts of this song sound like the music from Super NES Final Fantasy games. I also like it because Animal Collective are extending a middle finger (or, uh, part of a paw) to NBC's viewing audience. Watch it until the end for an awesomely awkward Conan/AC moment.

High Places

Back in March, I went back home to Connecticut for Spring Break (WOOOOOOOO), and on the last night of my stay visited my then-Brooklyn-dwelling buddies Zach and Andy to see Lightning Bolt in a warehouse. Apparently, about 3000 other people had the same idea – the venue it was held in was roughly the size of DC’s 9:30 Club, with two massive rooms set up for the different bands to play in. Also on the bill were the excellent BARR (aka Brendan Fowler), Marnie Stern, Baltimore’s Ecstatic Sunshine (who will be profiled here upon the release of their next album Living), and this band from Brooklyn that I hadn’t heard anything about, High Places.

And holy shit were they awesome. High Places are Mary Pearson and Robert Barber, who sing tropical pop songs over electronic beeps, spacey field recordings, and percussion played on found objects. After playing them for my friend Ebbie, he said it sounded kind of like Creature Comforts-era Black Dice covering Microphones songs, and that’s an interesting way of describing them. High Places share the otherworldly, blissful qualities of both of these bands, and would be at home on K Records alongside the Blow and Mount Eerie.

High Places released a 7” earlier this year on Ancient Almanac, an interesting label that releases just as many objets d’art as they do music releases. I guess I got one of the last of the pressing, because they recently sold out of the ridiculously limited edition of 300 copies on white vinyl. They also have a new 7” out, a picture disk with photographs by Los Angeles photographer David Horvitz.

I ripped the A side of their first 7”, featuring the songs “Head Spins” and “Sandy Feat”, which have a Deerhunter-esque electronic wash as an interlude between the tracks. “Sandy Feat” is without a doubt one of my favorite songs of the year. Keep an eye on High Places, because they’re making some of the most interesting, unique, and catchy music being written by anyone.

High Places – Head Spins/Sandy Feat

Yukon

Man, when I moved to College Park, I was so stoked on DC. There were so many good bands that I was really into – Mass Movement of the Moth, Polar, Q and Not U, Navies, and so on… but in the past two years the DC scene has kind of collapsed onto itself. It seems like the only bands that are still around are hardcore bands, and while there are some hXc bands that still rage (particularly Coke Bust, who will be featured on this blog in the near future), there’s not a lot of weird shit that I can get stoked on.
Fortunately, College Park is 30 minutes away from Baltimore, which has the best scene in the country right now. One of the highlights of this scene are Yukon, who released their debut full-length Mortar on local label Terra Firma last year. Yukon would be put squarely into the math-rock camp, as vague and overused as that term can be. They’re a complicated band, sure, but instead of mere technical masturbation along the lines of Guitar Center dudes, they ROCK THE FUCK OUT. Think early/mid-period Don Caballero, or Polvo with their amps turned all the way up.

The first time I saw them was last year, in College Park legend Don Wade’s basement, on a bill with fellow Baltimorons Dactyl and Silver Spring’s Fugazi-loving The Fordists, both excellent bands. But Yukon seriously blew me away – the perfect combination of complicated and noisy riffs, laser-precise drumming, and Denny Bowen (who also plays drums in the excellent Double Dagger) howling low in the mix about urban planning. How fucking awesome is that.

I think the key to Yukon’s success might be in their drummer, Nick Podgurski, who is trained in jazz and brings a wide array of tricks to the rhythm section. He can be heard especially on “Ribosome,” the #1 hit single off of Mortar, and really ties the band together a la Damon Che. Don Cab’s kind of a lazy comparison to make, considering the breadth of the genre, but there aren’t many bands that know how to kick out the jams like the men of Yukon. These guys never fall into the trap of noodly bullshit, they just play tightly-constructed jam after jam.

They’re playing Bodymore Murderland on October 13, at the Current Gallery. Don’t miss them.

Highlights from Mortar:

Yukon – Consolation Enterprise
Yukon – Ribosome

pirst fost

Instead of studying for a big exam I have tomorrow, I decided to set up a blog that I've been meaning to do for a while now. This blog is going to be the source of all information regarding my radio show, Street Anger Radio, Tuesdays 4-6 PM on WMUC-FM 88.1, ten watts of goodwill broadcasting out of College Park, Maryland. I'll be posting ripped streams of the show here, as well as about various bands, songs, and records that I'm particularly excited about.

Blogger software is really slow.

-- Chris
